Mining for "Duntons" on the Internet
Compiled by Michael L. Dunton

For the past few years, many of us have grown accustom to searching out family information in the form of written history and genealogical formats.  I have begun to use broader search techniques to help locate other bits of information pertaining to our family.  Perhaps you do this also.

This newsletter is made up of such nuggets mined from the Internet.  If I have found additional content about the picture, it is included.  If you have information to share, please take the time to email me at and I will add it to the family archive.

If I have the opportunity, and finances, to acquire the objects, I make every attempt.  If you are a frequent visitor to this Web site and Dunton Family resource, you are aware of the goals and objectives.  If you happen to possess items that you would like to donate to the family archive, please contact us.

This is a wonderful early writing book titled ``Free-hand Series of Writing Books - The Original Duntonian System of Rapid Writing'' by A.R. Dunton. Published in 1880 by J.W.C. Gilman, this book was to be used in conjunction with the Duntonian ``School'' Pen and contains 24-pages that have a sample at the top and ruled lines to practice on underneath. The inside and back covers give directions and general rules for writing. Size of book measures 7" x 8-1/2" and condition is good (slight age discoloration on cover).

This was also being sold on ebaY (Note:  I bid but was not able to place the winning bid).  The listing stated the it is a color postcard of Elm Street in Dallas, Texas.  "Mirro-Krome card by H.S. Crocker, Los Angeles 17, Calif.  Photo by Hubert Lowman. Dist by Texas Post Card Co.  The time period in the 50s.  Does anyone know anything about  "Dunton's Cafeteria"?

Doten-Dunton Artistic Furniture for Banks & Offices

Here is another interesting bit of history that was for sale.  It is a 1914 magazine advertisement for the Doten-Dunton Desk Company, 25-J Arch Street, Boston, Mass.

The copy for the ad reads, "Furniture that gives prestige.  Corporations and Banking offices, fitted with substantial, artistic furniture impress the visitor as having financial solidity and capable business management.  We have, for many years, made a specialty of designing and making fine office furniture that combines beauty with dignity and enduring qualities, aiming in character and effect to harmonize with ant requirements and give distinction and prestige.  We also make COMPLETE STANDARDIZED OUTFITS in various styles for large or small offices."

Dunton Family Organization Support Opportunities
Your Reply is Requested

This Web site was created to fill a need -- that is, to create a tool that could be used to foster communication and to help other Dunton (and name variants) family members find each other and learn how they fit in this community that we call family.  It is a place to feel welcome and a place to which (by right of birth, adoption, or marriage) we all belong.

Over the years, many people have supported this project by submitting articles, family group sheets, copies of documentation, etc.  Many of you have asked about contributing with the payment of "dues".  In the past, I have told people that it was not necessary and have personally supported it out of pocket.

As you will read this issue's installment of "Life on the Farm", I have taken a leap of faith.  It is a major life change that I have very high hopes for.  As I make these personal changes, I am evaluating where my resources are being used.  The two main ones being TIME and MONEY.  I really need to hear from you to better understand if this project is wanted or needed.

There are several ways in which you can help me to support this effort.

  1. Contribute articles, news events, and announcements that can easily be cut from an email message or attached word processing document and pasted into a Web page.  This content must be original work with the copyright being held by the submitter.

  2. Contribute family data files for the GeneWeb database.

  3. Contribute photos, documents, or other items of family interest that can be added to the archive project and made available to all members.

  4. Use the Homesite Webstore, an Amazon.com affiliation, and help to financially support the site.  As we head into the holiday season, please consider making your purchases through this portal.

  5. Cash contributions, of any size, will be welcomed.  If we start receiving income, we will make an accounting of the funds available online.  No funds will be used for compensation of time.  Time is a resource that is to be donated.

  6. Rent advertising space -- Do you own a business or are you promoting an event?  Contact us for rates.

Finally, if there is enough interest, we will plan on moving forward with setting up a dedicated Web site and move it off of my personal ISP location.

What I would like to know is if you are interested in donating a small amount and having a personalized email address.  For $12 per year (a mere $1 per month) with no additional setup fees,  you will get you an email address in the following format:

YourName@Dunton.org

If enough of you are interested (23 to be exact), I will go ahead and set up the Web server with the organization domain name.  All you need to provide, along with the $12, is an email address where you would like to have mail delivered.  I will take care of configuring the mail server so that the mail is routed.  You also will want to change your "Reply To:" address in your mail program.  That way, people can begin to memorize your Dunton.org mail address.

As an added benefit, aside from supporting the family organization, you get a constant mail address.  How many of you have moved or otherwise changed email addresses?  You can appreciate the time it takes to notify every Web service that you have registered with, every friend or family member, perhaps change letterhead and business cards.  That all goes away with this service.

If you change your email address changes, all you need to do is notify me of the address change, and we will redirect to your new address.  (We will allow one free change per calendar year and request a $4 donation for each change after that).  To the rest of the world your mail address never changed!  This offer is open to anyone that wants a personalized email address with the "Dunton.org" domain name.  Tell all of your family members.

"Announcements"
Submit obituaries, marriage, military service, special events, birth announcements and prayer requests to keep us all up to date!

Sue and Sam Dunton celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in August of '99.

Larry and Carole Dunton celebrate 39 years on November 24th.  Congratulations!

A colleague of Vance Dunton will presented a paper on October 20th that Vance is the principal author of,  "STI-CMP Process Improvement with Optical Endpoint Detection" (by Vance Dunton and Frank Szarka) at the fall 1999 meeting of the Electrochemical Society in Honolulu.

"Life On The Farm"
Being a brief regular accounting of the events from life on the Victor Hugo Dunton farmstead in Oregon

Life on the farm is never dull.  Fall is definitely upon us, and although our growing season unusually short this year, we have had an abundance in harvest.

Are you ready for winter and the dawning of a new century?

I alluded to a major life change in the previous article.  On October 8th, I resigned from my position as Information Systems Manager of a publicly traded medical diagnostics manufacturer.  Not to move to a new employer, but to practice what I preach and become my own boss.

Only time will tell if this will be a permanent arrangement, but I am going to at least take the winter months to get the Victory Seed Company ready for the 2000 growing season.

I will continue to do Web design work and contract  I.T. consulting under our firm, Network Services Group, LLC. (www.WebGrower.com)

I am hoping that through these ventures, I will have more available time to spend on fun projects like coordinating the family genealogy efforts.

Please continue to send your family updates and news articles and please forgive me if I am a bit slow at replying to email.  It is not because I don't care.

Take care, slow down, live life, and may the Lord bless and protect you and your family.

Mike Dunton - 10/12/99
