Practical Skills
Featuring information for learning and preserving
old time skills

This field of study is where history and genealogy come alive.  Learning to accomplish the tasks, in the exact way that they were performed daily, helps us to better understand the lives of our ancestors.

To me, if our genealogy is a "skeleton", and family stories are the "flesh", practicing these skills is the breath that makes our history alive.

The Book of Buckskinning Series Page

A very good series for the historical reenactor, experimental archaeologist, or anyone interested in common 17th, 18th, & 19th century life skills.

Eric Sloane's Books of Americana

If you are not familiar with this man's work, you are in for a treat.  An excellent illustrator and writer, Mr. Sloane spent years documenting the quickly disappearing America that existed from the earliest of colonial days, into the early 20th century.

The Foxfire Series Page

A classic series of books documenting the "old-timey ways" of rural Appalachia.
