Robert Gilley Dunton died Feb. 19, 1999, in Fort Myers, Fla. Born in Southwest Harbor on Oct. 11, 1914, he was the son of George Ebenezer Dunton and Rebecca Bethsheba Gilley. The Dunton and Gilley families, longtime Mainers, trace their ancestry back to the early 1600s. Although the Dunton family home is Northeast Harbor, Bob and his wife Dorothy retired to Florida, summering in Northeast Harbor and on Webb Pond in Eastbrook.
Bob graduated from Rockland High School in 1931, from Bowdoin College cum laude in 1935, and later earned his MBA from NYU. He married Dorothy Margaret Magune of Rockland in 1939. His employment began with Eastern Steamship Lines in 1935. In 1942, he accepted a position with Western Electric, a division of AT&T, now Lucent Technologies. He retired on Dec. 31, 1973, as manager of planning and development of the Customer Planning Division.
His philanthropic and community activities were numerous and varied, spanning social, political, economic and religious causes. He was an avid sportsman, private pilot, and humanitarian.
Bob is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sister, Margaret Merritt; sons, Robert Jr., John and wife, Lynne; and grandsons, John and James.
A memorial service will be held at the Eastbrook Baptist Church on Saturday, June 26, at 10 a.m. with interment at the family plot in Somesville immediately following. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Hope Hospice or the charity of your choice.
