MR. AND MRS. DUNTON MARRIED 50 YEARS
Will Observe Their Golden Wedding Today at Home on Cottage Street

Mr. and Mrs. Andrew J. Dunton of Cottage Street will observe the 50th anniversary of their marriage at their home today. Mr. Dunton was for 35 years engaged in the wholesale marble business in this section and later for several years in the coal business with his son F. O. Dunton. He is a member of Roberts post, GAR, and of the Masonic fraternity.

Mr. and Mrs. Dunton were married in Pawlet, January 13, 1866, by Rev. William Earle, at that time pastor of the Methodist Church of Pawlet. Before her marriage Mrs. Dunton was Miss Harriet Alexander of Pawlet. Mr. Dunton was a native of West Dorset.

In 1862, when only 17 years old, Mr. Dunton enlisted in company C of the 14th Vermont regiment. After serving 17 months in that company, he was discharged and promptly re-enlisted in the 1st Vermont, heavy artillery, serving for the remainder of the war. He was discharged with the rank of Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant.

Fought in 19 Battles

During his service, Mr. Dunton took part in 19 battles and many skirmishes. His marriage took place shortly after the close of the war. For two years thereafter his health was not good, having been impaired by constant exposure during his military service.

As soon as his health would permit, Mr. Dunton engaged in the marble business, first with the Field Marble company and later at the Redfield Proctor plant in Proctor. Several years later he took charge of the J. B.  Reynolds marble plant, which manufactured burial vaults and was located on the present site of the F. R. Patch Manufacturing company.

Later he was for nine years superintendent of the Columbian Marble company in this city, resigning at the end of that time to accept the general management of the Esperanza company of West Rutland. Later he served as general manager of the Bardillo Marble company. Mr. Dunton retired from the marble business about 15 years ago.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Dunton enjoy good health and are as active as most people many years their juniors. Mr. Dunton is possessed of considerable carpentering skill and has constructed many beautiful articles of furniture in his leisure hours. 

Have Lived in Rutland 44 Years

Mr. and Mrs. Dunton have been residents of this city for 44 years. In 1879, when Rutland was a village, Mr. Dunton was elected as a trustee. Since that time he has not taken an active interest in politics. 

Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Dunton, of whom three are still living. They are Frank O. Dunton of this city, Mrs. Herbert Smith of Fair Haven and Henry W. Dunton of Battle Lake, Minn. A daughter, Miss Sylvia Dunton, well known in Rutland musical circles, died about five years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Dunton of Cottage street will be at home to friends after 3 o'clock this afternoon.
